Helpston Stores and Post Office

Operating from the same premises for over 100 years (although modernised a number of times over that period!) Helpston Stores is a focal point of village life.

A member of the Londis chain, it sells a wide variety of groceries and household items including freshly baked bread, is an off-licence and a newsagent. The modern Post Office branch provides cash withdrawal, travel and insurance services as well as the traditional posting facilities. There is also a cash point inside the shop.

The shop is located in the centre of the village, opposite the village green on West Street. It is open from 0730-1900 Monday to Friday, 0800-1900 Saturday, and from 0900-1200 on Sunday.

The 1889 Ordnance Survey map shows the post office where it is today. It is not entirely clear when it was established. A directory entry for 1876 does not show a postmaster, although a Mr Henry Shillaker is listed as baker, draper and grocer and may have well occupied the premises at that date. Kelly's 1898 Directory lists as Mr Young as Postmaster, as well as baker, draper and grocer.
