Botolph’s Barn Health and Safety Policy

Section A- General Statement of Policy

Our policy, so far as is reasonably practicable, is to provide and maintain safe and healthy working conditions and equipment for all our voluntary helpers, and to provide such information, training and supervision as they need for this purpose.

We will also endeavour to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare of all contractors, visitors and people hiring the Barn.

The allocation of duties for safety matters and the particular arrangements which we will make are set below.

The policy will be kept up to date, particularly in light of any changes to our buildings or activities.

Section B- Organisation and Responsibilities

1. Responsibility of the incumbent and the Churchwardens

Botolph’s Barn is owned by St Botolph’s Church, and as such, overall responsibility for health and safety is that of the incumbent rector, represented by the churchwardens, who will ensure that arrangements are in place to satisfy Health and Safety Regulations and appropriate Codes of Practice.

Specific responsibilities may be delegated to other Church Personnel. As new projects emerge, the names of responsible persons will be notified and the list amended accordingly.

2. Responsibility of the Parochial Church Council

The Parochial Church Council has general responsibility to ensure that the health and safety policy for Botolph’s Barn is implemented, although operational responsibility lies with the members of the Botolph’s Barn Committee.

3. Responsibility of the Health and Safety Officer

The following person carries the responsibility for day to day implementation of the arrangements outlined in the policy:

Hazardous Substances

Where at all possible we have eliminated the use of hazardous substances, where this is not possible, our safety arrangements are as follows:

For all hazardous substances, which include substances marked as ‘harmful, irritant, corrosive, toxic etc., product information provided by manufacturers is used to determine methods of use, storage and action to take in the event of an accident.

Slips Trips and Falls

In order to reduce the risk of slips, trips and falls an inspection will be made every year by the responsible person of all floors and stairs inside and immediately outside. Any defects reported and repairs carried out.

Preparation of Food

  1. We ensure that we follow the appropriate regulations governing the preparation and storage of foodstuffs.
  2. We ensure that all food handlers receive adequate supervision.
  3. We ensure that the appropriate assessment of risks is carried out for the foods to be prepared.
  4. Before any preparation commences, all surfaces coming into contact with the food must be cleaned.

  1. The Barn Manager will ensure that any hirers of the Barn who wish to prepare or provide food are advised of the facilities and procedures.

Manual Handling- lifting and carrying items

Instructions will be given to voluntary helpers and users of the Barn, giving advice on moving the chairs and tables.

Tables should only be lifted in pairs, and care should be taken when stacking chairs, as there is a possibility of trapped fingers.

Display Screen Equipment

  1. Brightness on computer screens is set to a ‘natural’ setting, to reduce eye strain.
  2. Keyboards have built-in wrist supports.
  3. User friendly software is loaded onto the PCs, including tutorial programmes.

Building Hazards

  1. Our policy is to ensure that the building is safe and without risks to the health, safety and welfare of all who use it. In order to achieve this the building is inspected every ......... by ............

  4. Contractors should have clear instructions of the areas where they are permitted to work and the extent of the work they are authorised to undertake.
